ICOS-Finland infrastructure

The Finnish research stations that contribute to the European ICOS provide good representatives of boreal and subarctic Eurasian environment in a transition zone from marine to continental climate. You can find the detailed locations of the stations at Google maps.

ICOS-verkko4 Atmospheric stations (class 1)

2 Ecosystem stations (class 1)

  • SMEAR II (Hyytiälä) – Southern boreal pine forest
  • Sodankylä forest (Pallas-Sodankylä GAW) – Northern boreal pine forest

2 Ecosystem stations (class 2)

6 associate ecosystem stations (class 3)

The Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) involving 80 countries provides reliable scientific data and information on the chemical composition of the atmosphere, its natural and anthropogenic change, and helps to improve the understanding of interactions between the atmosphere, the oceans and the biosphere.

A network of SMEAR stations (Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations) cover all main aspects of atmospheric and soil physics and chemistry, biosphere-atmosphere interactions and ecophysiology of vegetation. The SMEAR stations are operated by University of Helsinki (Department of Physics and Department of Forest Sciences) and University of Eastern Finland.
